Description

IV (Rattus Norvegicus) is the explosive debut studio album by The Stranglers and one of the defining British punk and new wave records of the 1970s.

Released in 1977, the album introduced the unmistakable combination of Hugh Cornwell’s vocals and guitar, Jean-Jacques Burnel’s aggressive bass sound, Dave Greenfield’s distinctive keyboards and Jet Black’s powerful drumming.

Featuring the classics (Get A) Grip (On Yourself), Peaches, Hanging Around, Sometimes and the epic Down In The Sewer, the album captures The Stranglers at their rawest and most uncompromising.

A landmark British debut album and an essential record from the original punk and new wave era.

Pressing Notes

UK United Artists Records vinyl edition of The Stranglers’ legendary 1977 debut album.

Originally released in April 1977, Rattus Norvegicus was deliberately prefixed The Stranglers IV, a title choice that helped create the impression that the band had already released three previous albums.

The album was produced by Martin Rushent and quickly became one of the most successful albums associated with Britain’s original punk era.

Original-era UK vinyl copies remain highly desirable among collectors of The Stranglers, punk, new wave and classic British rock.
