Sound-System is Herbie Hancock's fascinating 1984 follow-up to Future Shock, continuing his pioneering exploration of jazz, funk, electronic music and early hip-hop influences.
Produced by Herbie Hancock and Bill Laswell / Material, the album combines Hancock's keyboards and synthesizers with electronic drum programming, turntable scratching, African percussion and the distinctive kora playing of Gambian musician Foday Musa Suso.
The record features the driving opener "Hardrock", the atmospheric "Metal Beat", the African-influenced "Junku" and the Grammy Award-winning title track "Sound-System". It captures Hancock at a particularly inventive point in his career, blending cutting-edge 1980s technology with jazz improvisation and global musical influences.
