In The Studio is the third and final studio album released by the Specials-related group under the name The Special AKA, originally released in June 1984.
Following the departure of Terry Hall, Neville Staple, Lynval Golding and Roddy Radiation from The Specials, Jerry Dammers, John Bradbury and Horace Panter continued under the Special AKA name, joined by vocalist Stan Campbell, guitarist John Shipley and Rhoda Dakar.
The album represents a more experimental direction, blending ska and reggae with soul, jazz, funk and Middle Eastern influences. It also carries a strong political and social conscience, most notably on the international anthem “(Free) Nelson Mandela”, which became one of the group’s best-known recordings.
Other highlights include “Racist Friend”, “War Crimes”, “Housebound”, “Night On The Tiles” and “What I Like Most About You Is Your Girlfriend”.

The album was released under the name The Special AKA, although it is closely associated with The Specials and their 2 Tone legacy. The original UK LP contains ten tracks and was produced principally by Jerry Dammers, with additional production contributions from Dick Cuthell and Elvis Costello.
