Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now was released in 1984 and became The Smiths' first UK Top 10 single, firmly establishing the band as one of Britain's most influential independent acts. Written by Morrissey and Johnny Marr, the song perfectly balances Marr's shimmering guitar work with Morrissey's wry, self-deprecating lyrics, creating one of the defining singles of the 1980s.
