Suedehead was released in 1988 as Morrissey's debut solo single following the dissolution of The Smiths. Written by Morrissey and Stephen Street, the song introduced a new chapter in Morrissey's career while retaining the lyrical wit and melodic sophistication that had made him one of Britain's most distinctive songwriters. The single became an immediate success, reaching No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart, and paved the way for the release of his debut solo album, Viva Hate.
